Attraction Marketing Sucks

By Jack Bastide

The big buzz today in Network Marketing and MLM is Attraction Marketing. There are gurus sprouting up all over the internet that promise to teach you how to sit back and wait while prospects come to you with credit card in hand. All you have to do is buy their $497 Attraction marketing course.

What Is Attraction Marketing?

So what exactly is Attraction Marketing? Well it’s nothing more than creating a presence online so that prospects can find you. Create some Youtube Videos, start a blog, write some articles, create an info product, build a list. Sounds easy enough right?

Here’s the problem. Attraction Marketing is extremely time consuming and not duplicable. If your team is spending their time learning how to do videos and setting up blogs they are not doing the ONE thing that IS going to make them money … Talking to prospects!

And here’s a question. If Attraction marketing is the holy grail of network marketing why are these gurus not using it to build a huge team? Instead they choose to make money by selling you the information. Think about it. The truth is that many of the “Gurus” have never built a significant network marketing organization. But they will teach you how to do it … for a fee of course!

Don’t Believe the Hype!

Burn your names List! Never pick up the phone! Just pay me for my course and you will never have to call a lead again! Buy my Super Duper Whiz Bang Attraction Marketing funded proposal system and you can build a huge Network marketing organization without ever talking to a single human being! If you believe all of this nonsense I got some swampland in Florida to sell you real cheap. I have news for you …many of the top earners in MLM barely even use a computer!

Now let me take a step back a little bit. I am not opposed to building a Network marketing organization online. I am not opposed to Attraction Marketing. I have been doing it for years. But you have to have realistic expectations. If you think you are going to put up a blog and have people immediately calling you to join your business it’s not going to happen. It can take months and even years to develop a huge online presence.

Attraction Marketing systems like Magnetic Sponsoring, Renegade Network Marketer Attraction Marketing Blueprint and others can work, but not overnight. The most important thing to realize is that they will NEVER work as good for you as they do for the Guru’s that wrote them, They are branding the Guru and not you.

Network Marketing (MLM) Is a Relationship Business

Network Marketing is a relationship business. We are in the people business. So why not start with the people that you already have a relationship with? I know you don’t want to hear this but start with your warm market. Give them a call. Send them a card using a system like Send Out Cards. Send them an email. Let them know what you are doing.

From there you can go to your extended warm market. Connect with some people from the past through social media like Facebook, Twitter or Linked-in. Social media is also a great way to meet new people but you have to do it correctly and that’s beyond the scope of this article. Attraction Marketing can be part of your arsenal as well … just don’t fall for the hype.

One of the most important factors in your MLM Business is daily consistent action. You don’t want to keep starting and stopping your business. It’s much better to put an hour a day into your business than to do nothing all week and go crazy on the weekends. Once you get a consistent action going the momentum starts and you couldn’t stop it if you wanted to.

A Guy in my company did an example last year at our convention. The room was broken down into two parts, the left side and the right side. When he said “Go” both sides started moving. They would turn around and touch two people next to them. The two people that were touched would stand up and do the same. When he said “Stop” the left side would stop moving but the right side would continue moving. Then he would say “Go” again and the left side would start moving again This went on a couple times. By the time the right side was all standing only 1/4 of the left side was standing!

Each “break” that the left side took was only about two seconds. Yet it caused them to fall dramatically behind. Why did this happen? Because they weren’t take Daily consistent action. (Oh and by the way rearranging your desk doesn’t count as an action!)

So What Actions Should You Take?

These are the 8 Daily Actions that you should take in your Network Marketing Business

Build Your Network – There is a saying that goes like this: “Your Net Worth is Determined by your Network” Basically this means to build as many relationships with quality people as you can. It can be online relationships through forums and Social networking sites or offline face to face relationships. Bottom line is if you make a lot of cool friends your business will grow.

Making Contact - This means initially contacting people to tell them about your business / products. It could be making a phone call, an email, sending them a card with Send Out Cards or any other method.

Doing a Presentation - This means actually doing a presentation. It could be a face to face meeting, a 3 way call, a teleconference, a webinar or however you present your business. I try to do a presentation of my business at least 1 -3 times a day.

Follow Up - The fortune is in the follow-up. You need to keep contacting you prospects until they tell you no. Go for the No. I’d rather have somebody tell me No then to drag me along with a maybe. Try to get a decision. People are often reluctant to tell you know for fear of hurting your feelings. Give them permission to make a decision, even if that decision is No!

Training - You should be a lifelong student. Learn about Marketing . learn about people learn about your products and company. Most importantly train your team to do what you do.

Personal Development - You should spend at least 30 minutes a day on personal development. Go on a “News Diet” Instead if listening to people who tell you how bad everything is listen to people who tell you how good everything could be

Send a Heartfelt Card Daily - OK this is a personal thing THAT I Do. I send out a greeting card to at least one person a day. Its not a “Sales Pitch” but rather just a card to say ‘Hey I’m thinking about you” You would be amazed at the reaction you will get! I use an automated greeting card system called Send Out Cards

Signing up a Distributor / Customer - This is where we make the money. However all of the other things we are talking about will lead to this so do even worry about it. If you are taking consistent daily action the signups will com.

In your Network Marketing career you’re going to come in contact with three types of people; Robins, Hawks, and Eagles.

Robins

A Robin is generally a person who signs up and never gets started. They may be very excited at first but this soon fades. Sometimes Robins sign up and drop off the face of the earth immediately. You can call them and e-mail them and they will never respond.

When you do finally get in touch with them they always have a great excuse.

“I’m busy at work”

“My child got sick”

“We have relatives visiting”

“I’m in a bowling tournament”

Robins will always come up with very legitimate excuses. In fact, if they would work at their business as hard as they work at their excuses, they would build a heck of a business.

85% Of The People You Sponsor Are Going To Be Robins.

Hawks

A hawk is a casual business builder. They will occasionally show up on conference calls and events. Sometimes a Hawk will actually sponsor somebody. They are not consistent. They are on again, off again.

12% of the people that you sponsor are going to be Hawks

Eagles are people that seize the opportunity and run with it.

You should spend 95% of your time with the Eagles

You should spend 5% of the time with the Hawks

You should spend 0% of your time with the Robins

Now this may sound harsh. After all, the Robins and Hawks are the ones that really need help. But you have to understand this. They may need help but they don’t want help. When I was new to Network Marketing I would spend all my time trying to motivate people. All it did was get me frustrated.

Robins and Hawks can sometimes turn into Eagles. When this does happen it’s very rarely because of something that you did. It’s a decision on their part. Often it’s a matter of timing. Sometimes somebody may have all the ability in the world but the timing is just not right for them to be building a business. This may or may not change over time.

Most of the time Eagles are not people that you personally enrolled. They may show up 2, 3, 4 or more levels down. Work with them as if you personally enrolled them. What will happen over time is the Robins and Hawks above them will quit and the Eagles will roll up and be on your front line.

Eagles are majestic. They soar high in the air. They can spot a fish 10 feet underwater from 1000 feet in the air. They will then go into a dive and retrieve that fish. Eagles always get what they want and never let anything get in the way.

Spend the majority of your time working with your Eagles and looking for new Eagles. When and if your Robins and Hawks are ready to get serious you will be there for them,

I’m going to share with you a little about how I was personally introduced to MLM through a little 2 x 3.5 inch piece of cardboard called a drop card or sizzle card.I can remember it like it was yesterday. I was walking in Manhattan and went to use a phone booth. There stuck in the corner of the booth was a little card that said: “Earn More In One Month than Doctors Earn In a Year”. The little card I found is known as a drop card or a sizzle card. It’s basically a business card with a promotional message.

Because I was introduced to MLM through a sizzle card what do you think my main activity was for my first year in MLM?? You guessed it sizzle cards! I put them everywhere, phone booths, ATM machines, car windshields, public restrooms, car windshields … you name it! And it worked, and continues to work to this day.

What Can You Do With Sizzle Cards?

Hand them out to people
Place in phone booths
Tack to a community bulletin board
Place in books and magazines
Place under windshield wipers
Set on benches in the mall
Include them in your bill payments
Food court table at the mall
People at a bus stop
Place on Store Counters (ask owner)
Put in a poly bag by the gas pump
Put in pockets in clothing stores
PUT THEM WHEREVER PEOPLE WILL FIND THEM!

So Where Do I Do Get Sizzle Cards?

Now you may be looking for free sizzle cards or your question might be where can I find cheap sizzle cards? I believe that you can order free sizzle cards from Vistaprint. I’m not going to make any other recommendations as to where to get sizzle cards for one reason. New suppliers are popping up all the time. The best thing to do is Google “Sizzle cards”. You will find many choices available. There are places where you can get 5000 cards for about $100 so try and stay in that range if you want the cheapest sizzle cards.

What You Should Know About Sizzle Cards

In order to get really good results with Sizzle cards you need to put out massive amounts. You should expect 20 – 50 leads for every 1000 cards you put out. It could be more and it could be less so just use that as a guideline. Yellow Sizzle cards work well.

When I first got started in MLM I used Sizzle cards as a MAJOR activity. I would set aside time and put out massive quantities in phone booths and on car windshields. It worked but it was time consuming. I now use them as a passive activity. I carry cards with me and as I go about my daily activities I leave them around.

Be careful when putting card on private property. I have had encounters with security while in mall parking lots and such. Just use common sense and you should be ok

Good luck and Happy Carding!

By Jack Bastide

It seems that almost every week you hear of a new pre launch MLM. These pre-launches are often accompanied by a lot of excitement and hype, especially if there is spillover involved, such as in a binary or forced matrix. But is a pre launch MLM a good investment of your time and energy?

It all depends on you and your tolerance for risk. Early on in my network marketing career I was involved with a pre launch MLM. My partner and I were able to build a team of over 1,000 people fairly quickly. Soon after this the company went out of business.

Luckily we are able to find another company very quickly. But do you want to keep having to jump from company to company because the pre launch MLM you joined failed? It’s not fun and every time you have to move you lose credibility because people start to question your judgment

So once again … Is a pre launch MLM a good investment of your time and energy? Well let’s check the Pros and Cons

The Pros of a Pre Launch MLM

You’re in early and at the top. A large percentage of people that join will be in your down line. Your down line income could be quite substantial

You could get lots of spillover… if the compensation plan allows it.

The Cons of a Pre Launch MLM

There is an extremely good chance that the company will fail within two years. It may happen even faster. Startups are very risky in any industry … not just network marketing.

There may be lot of changes with the company. They may have to change the compensation plan. They may try different products. What I have found in MLM and in life in general is that people don’t like change. Your team may get spooked.

Your down line may bail out when the next pre launch MLM comes along. Many people that are attracted to a pre launch MLM get bored easily and will move on when the next one comes along.

My Advice to You

I would recommend not getting involved with a prelaunch MLM. I would say look for a company that is at least 3, and preferably 5 years old and has all the bugs worked out. Don’t fall for the “Get in Now” hype.

If an opportunity is good now it will be good a year from now. Don’t let anybody rush you into joining. If you do want to join a pre launch MLM make sure you do your due diligence. Join based on sound business principles and not because of hype

Google is your friend. Do a search on the company and see what other people are saying about it. If they all seem to be talking about the business opportunity and rarely mention the product steer clear.

Sleep On It. There is no need to join immediately. Take a few days to really think it over. If your potential sponsor is pressuring you there is something wrong.

Good luck in your search. I have been involved in the network marketing industry since 1994 and couldn’t imagine doing anything else!

By Jack Bastide

There is an old saying that goes something like this: Never try to teach a pig to sing, it’s a waste of time and you will annoy the pig. What it means is that you should never try to convince somebody to your way of thinking. Not only will you most likely be unsuccessful you may damage the relationship with the person at the same time. This saying rings true in many areas of our lives but is especially true in Network Marketing. We are constantly trying to teach pigs to sing!

What is the first thing you do when a prospect rejects your opportunity or products? You probably spend a lot of time trying to convince them that they need what you have; instead of just going out and finding somebody that already wants what you have. As Networkers, we feel this need to justify what we do. I believe, rather than trying to teach a pig to sing, it’s better to let the fat lady sing and move on to the next prospect.

This is especially true when it comes to the people we care about the most, our friends and family. Many family arguments have occurred and many friends have been lost due to our tendency to try and convince people of the value of our products and opportunity. Remember there are lots of people out there who want and need what we have. Its not worth losing a relationship by trying to convince someone against their will.

Now I’m not saying that as soon as you get any kind of objection from a person you should give up on them. Some of the best Network Marketers were at one time skeptical about the industry. This skepticism is usually caused by the many misconceptions that the person may have due to their lack of knowledge about the industry.

When a person indicates they are not interested in my opportunity I ask them what they don’t like about it. It is important to do this in a non-confrontational way such as “John do you mind if I ask you what a quick question?”. If they say yes I then ask. “What is it that you don’t like about Company X?” If they say “Its just not for me” I don’t push them. I may ask them “Do you mind if I contact you in a few months to see if your situation has changed and you are open to taking another look?

If they do tell me what their objection is I will then ask them: “Is that the only reason or is there anything else?” I let them get all their objections out at once. Once they have committed themselves to the fact that they have no more objections I will then say something like “John you have voiced some very interesting objections to the Company X opportunity. Some of them I have heard before, and some of them I haven’t. If I can show you that most of these objections do not hold true in this case would you at least be willing to listen?”

After I ask the magic question I simply shut up and wait for their answer. If they say they don?t think its for them or hem and haw and keep making excuses I thank them for their time and move on. This one little question will save you a lot of time; time that can be better spent talking to people who are open to listening to what you have to offer.

From the time they are born most people are conditioned to believe that they should work for someone else. Our whole education system is based on the idea of learning various skills so that we can get a job and spend the rest of our lives working in a cubicle for a large company. We are encouraged to find a safe secure job with good benefits, work for 40 years and then retire on a meager existence paid for by government programs. With this idea drummed into our heads on a daily basis its no surprise that most people don?t believe there’s a better way.

In your Network Marketing Career you are going to run into a lot of people that will tell you that you’re crazy and you will never be successful. What they really mean is that they can’t do it; and with that attitude they are probably right Sometimes its better just to let them go So keep your head up high and be proud of what you are doing. And remember, never try to teach a pig to sing, unless he wants to learn!

We always hear about how we should get out of our comfort zone in order to be successful in Network Marketing. However, for most people, getting too far out of their comfort zone can actually be harmful.

You wouldn’t tell a person who is very shy and brand new to Network Marketing to go and cold call a bunch of strangers. Even if they were willing to do so, the massive rejection they would get might turn them off to network marketing forever.

The correct way to get a new person to be comfortable with the phone is for you, their sponsor, to do the calls and let them listen in. As they become more comfortable they can say a little to the prospect also. Before long their comfort zone will stretch and they won’t even need you any more!

Several years ago I had an experience that allowed me to stretch my comfort zone. I was riding on the New York City Subway and next to me there was a woman reading Tony Robbins Book “Awake the Giant within you.” Since I had read the book I decided to engage her in conversation and asked her she liked the book.

Having been born and raised in NYC its been drummed into me not to talk to strangers and frankly I don’t know what possessed me to talk to her. Well it turned that she had just come back from a Tony Robbins Seminar and was very excited to talk about it. We chatted for a while and exchanged business cards. We may do business together, and we may not, but you can never have too many positive motivated friends!

What I did here was S-t-r-e-t-c-h my comfort zone just a little bit and it paid off. I didn’t jump totally out of my comfort zone by approaching a total stranger about my business. I simply began a conversation based on a common interest, the book she was reading. As we spoke I then mentioned the business but by this time I was comfortable doing so.

When I first got into MLM one thing my sponsor told me to do was “Walk and Talk.” This was walking around and asking total strangers if they were open to a business opportunity. I’ll never forget the time I walked up to somebody and asked them if they were interested in earning extra income. He looked at me like I had two heads and said, “You’ve got to be kidding!”

After being laughed at a few times I stopped doing it, it was too far out of my comfort zone. Later, we did it in teams and it was more comfortable I still felt a little foolish but since there were others around it wasn’t as hard. My comfort zone had s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d a bit.

Another perfect example of stretching the comfort zone is when I first started promoting my web site, SickofTheBoss.com. What I did was find the busiest corner I could find, hang a big sign around my neck that said Sick of the Boss?, and handed out fliers every morning before work promoting the site. It took a lot of nerve for me to do this because I thought that people would laugh at me. It also happened that the busiest place I could find was about a block away from where I worked and I was always in fear of a co-worker walking by.

The first day I did it I wore dark sunglasses and a hat so nobody would recognize me. After a few minutes I got a lot of smiles and even had people say Yes, I’m Sick of the Boss! Now I was more comfortable so I took off the hat. My comfort zone had stretched a little. By the third day I was no longer wearing the hat or the sunglasses.

When you bring a new person into the business you should try and find out what THEIR comfort zone is. Do they like to talk on the phone? Do they prefer to work Online. Are they willing to approach their warm contacts? One thing that I have found is that comfort zones change as time goes on. So remember, it’s not necessary to get out of your comfort zone. Just s-t-r-e-t-c-h it a bit!
