How Were You Introduced to MLM?

mlm-presentation1In the Treat Em Right Seminars that we do with our company one question that they always ask is this:

If you were introduced to the company by someone you already knew raise your hand

95% of the hands in the room go up!

So according to those statistics  the vast majority of people get introduced to MLM through their Warm Market … people that they already knew.

I think I would tend to agree with that  …

However, that’s not how I was introduced to MLM. I actually found out about Network Marketing when I found a little business card, known as a sizzle card,  in a phone booth. (remember phone booths?)

The wording on the card caught my attention. It said …

“Earn More In One Month Than Doctors Earn In a  Year”

I still remember it like it was yesterday. In fact I still have that card somewhere.

So what about you?  How were YOU Introduced to MLM?

  1. I was down on my luck and homeless, sitting in a bar drinking, and the bartender knew I needed to make some money, so she introduced me to another customer “who had a deal going”.

The “deal” happened to be selling water filters through an outfit called NSA.

I need to make some money really bad, so I sold about 10 or 15 water filters, but I just couldn’t grasp the idea of the multi-level structure, nor did I have the money to buy in. (People were buying those water filters in $5,000 – $25,000 quantities to qualify for different levels.

Anyway, I made a few bucks selling some filters, but the big payoff was I met a guy in Amway while I was selling the water filters, and he “showed me the plan”, and I “got it”.

So, I joined Amway with him, and invested about 10 years learning the business in Amway. While trying to recruit a fellow I met in the old AOL chat room, he convinced me that his business was “better”, so I gave it a shot. That was in September of 1998.

Long story short, by February 1, 1999 I was making enough money to quit my job (it was a low-paying job) and I have not had to have a J-O-B since, praise the Lord!

  2. The first time a friend from Church stopped by with something he “had to share with us” including check stubs he flashed in my face. Bob had a reputation of not being a funny good-ole-boy and not necessarily 100% straight up.

The second time – and the time we stuck with as Bob’s company eventually went belly up and so did our business – it was my wife Shirley’s brother who called. Shirley had been very ill for many years and her brother Don suggested she try this product. Like Bob, Don was a funny guy and had been with at least dozens of companies over the years – this was the fifth or sixth time he came to us with something he “believed in.” and we out of desperation placed an order.

The products worked and a year later our business was born. The moral to the stories: don’t be afraid of going to people you think may not respect you or might even want to run and hide when they see you coming. For self interest reasons only, they may – just like I did – listen to you anyway.
